Carbon block vs GAC: choose by system behavior, not material name.
Both formats use activated carbon. The difference is how the media is held and how water moves through it—which changes contact, pressure drop, particle control and packaging options.

What carbon block changes
A bonded block fixes carbon particles into a controlled geometry. This can improve contact and add particle filtration, while creating a need to balance wall thickness, pore structure and pressure drop.
What GAC changes
A GAC cartridge contains loose granules, allowing media blends and an open flow path. Bed depth, mesh, packing, screens and the risk of preferential flow need to be considered.
Do not select by one headline number
Compare pressure drop at the rated flow, treatment capacity under the same challenge water, flush behavior, particle or micron definition, system bypass risk and batch repeatability.
When a system uses both
Multi-stage RO and drinking-water systems may use GAC and carbon block for different jobs. The sequence should reflect sediment load, disinfectant, required contact, final polishing and pressure available to the membrane or dispensing point.

Is carbon block always better than GAC?
No. Carbon block can provide a controlled path and physical filtration, while GAC can support lower restriction and flexible fills. The system target decides.
Which has lower pressure drop?
GAC often begins with a more open flow path, but actual pressure drop depends on media mesh, packing, cartridge design, flow and fouling. Compare model-level curves.
Can GAC and carbon block use the same coconut shell carbon?
They can share a carbon source, but particle size, processing, binder, packing and finished geometry differ.
Does carbon block automatically mean a health contaminant claim?
No. A material or format does not prove a claim. Verify the exact model, test conditions and current certification listing.
